More About Freedom Writes

Freedom Writes is an equity-centered education company founded by Dr. Jendayi Mbalia. After working in several K-12 schools, Dr. Mbalia noticed that many of the BIPOC students she worked with were disengaged. She conducted research and interviews that revealed a lack of equity and representation in their K-12 curriculum. In short, BIPOC students’ identities and needs were neglected. Thus, Dr. Mbalia created Freedom Writes with the following goals in mind: to develop curricular materials based on the needs of BIPOC students, to facilitate afterschool programming centered on BIPOC students’ identities and desires, and to coach educators on best practices necessary to effectively teach all students. Through school, network, and district level partnerships, Freedom Writes will help to ensure that all students are engaged thus leading to greater academic succes
