Program Overview

Literacy 4 Brown Girls is a literacy and identity based program designed to a) support literacy skills, b) aid in identity construction, and c) promote healthy social and emotional practices.

 
  • Literacy 4 Brown Girls works with students, through culturally responsive curriculum and instruction, on various literacy skills. Skills are aligned with students' grade level to aid in the mastery of skills practiced in their classrooms.

  • Literacy 4 Brown Girls supports the identity construction of all students by exposing them to books, writings, dialogue, and activities that are relatable to their lived experiences. Students began to feel confident, valued, and supported when their curriculum reflects their experiences.

  • Literacy 4 Brown Girls promotes healthy social and emotional practices by teaching students how to hold healthy conversations, work together, and treat one another with respect.

  • Literacy Skill Growth

    Literacy 4 Brown Girls works with students, through culturally responsive curriculum and instruction, on various literacy skills. Skills are aligned with students' grade level to aid in the mastery of skills practiced in their classrooms. To support literacy retention, students participate in independent and group readings, discussions, writings, and various other activities.

  • Positive Identity Construction

    Too often, Girls of Color receive harmful messaging regarding their identities. Through culturally responsive curriculum and instruction, Literacy 4 Brown Girls supports the identity construction of girls in the program by exposing them to books, writings, dialogue, and activities that are relatable to their lived experiences. Students begin to feel confident, valued, and supported when their curriculum reflects their experiences.

  • Social and Emotional Development

    Social and emotional development is crucial to the academic success of students. Through culturally responsive teaching, Literacy 4 Brown Girls promotes healthy social and emotional practices by teaching students how to hold healthy conversations, work together, and treat one another with respect. Ultimately, students begin to understand the importance of safe and healthy learning environments and positive relationships; they then take what they have learned into their classrooms, homes, and communities
